okay, something's funky with my computer and it's not making me happy. the hard drive keeps spinning and spinning with no reason and i'm getting nervous about it. anyone else out there in mac land been having this problem lately? the only changes that i can think of are the software update ones, and methinks those should generally improve performance. right? *sigh*

Two thought -- first, are you using any peer-to-peer filesharing programs? Even if you aren't downloading anything, somebody else pulling one of your shared files can keep your hard drive busy. Second -- do you have many applications (especially Photoshop) open when this happens? It may just be using a lot of virtual memory.

see, those would be my first thoughts as well. that's when it's expected to happen and when usually it would--when i was making my computer work hard. but today... nothing. i've shut down everything, and it just keeps spinning. i mean, it'll stop for a few minutes, but then start right back up again with no provocation. not to mention that it started this when the only things i had running were safari and msn messenger... not exactly a big workload. i turned off all of the sharing prefs too, just in case and still. grr. not happy. all i can think is that it has something to do with the new system updates. if so, it should pop up on caucus soon (i hope). if not, then i keep trying to figure it out.
