didn't i just say i was going to get my ass kicked?

well. that's what i did.

i quit before it got humiliating. the random race thing is just fine. until they make me play orcs. damn orcs. i just can't play them. the whole brute strength thing just doesn't make sense to me i guess. but the guy i was playing against was extraordinarily bitchy. i don't approve of his tactics at all. anyhow. um. yeah. i'll stop posting about this now.

Dirty Tactics

I always find it vaguely troubling that when you take humanity as a giant mass, a la online, how the average of humanity is sort of a brutish thug. Not everyone, but the average. Battle.net is NO exception. And the dirty tactics spread like a virus- of one brute uses them on another brute, they too then know the dirty tactic.

Blizzard Rushing. An archmage waltzes into town and casts blizzard on your peasants. Grunt rush. A hero with a few grunts blitz into your town and can prove surprisingly effective. Tower rush. Orcs run over to your base right away and build towers, which prove more effective than should really be possible. I eventually got to the point where I grudgingly accepted this kind of thing as the price of admission to the "real" game, where more "pure" tactics of skill and cunning can be waged.

The general orc strategy seems to be a mass of casters, and then maybe Taurens. Even with their thinner armor, a critical mass of casters is very difficult to stop. To pull this off, you can skip building a barracks altogether(!) and then upgrade your town hall with better speed than usual, using your hero and burrows, & maybe towers, for temporary protection. Once your town hall is rushed through, you get a second hero, build 2 tents and build a flood of casters. If you upgrade again you can get taurens with no other prequisite buildings.

Well, I've irreversibly branded myself as a games geek with THIS post. ; -)

World of Warcraft looks like it will be pretty fun, although potentially a huge time sink as well.
