tonight was rufus wainwright at first avenue with
borofish, exactly the way life should be. we got to catch up, listen to great music, and run into people we knew at every turn. ryan robbins, drew weitz, and a few other carls, people mike knew from the walker, and
riotpruf (yay!). now my feet hurt and i'm exhausted, the drive home was longer than i wanted it to be even if i was eating sushi with my fingers in the car. at any rate.
rufus was incredible. he looked fabulous, he sounded better, and he was obviously having fun. one of the best set lists i could have imagined, which i'll post tomorrow probably. martha opened... what an astounding woman. such pipes that girl has. the disappointment of the evening was, as i'd feared, that jeff wasn't playing with them (despite the fact that apparently the tour he was supposed to be skipping out for got cancelled) and not only that, but that teddy wasn't playing either because he was off touring in japan with his mother. terribly unfair, and we didn't even get butch on the drums tonight. the new keyboardist though? jason hart? he's a sweetheart. terribly nice guy. how do i know? because
borofish and i were not only front and center for the concert, we also got to go back stage and hang with the band after the show. this is the point where i'm terribly glad that mike had his walker in with jenni (the other back-up vocalist), seeing as my usual in wasn't in town. but so. got our set lists signed by everyone who matters, talked with people, met again the two boys i'd been on the tour bus with last time rufus played first ave, and got noted as a redhead not once, but two or maybe even three times. mike and i both were told that we'd been noticed from onstage. me for my hair and for watching the band, and
borofish for sneaking peeks at the set list, tall boy that he is. *grin* all in all a fantastic night. i have a great poster, martha's album, a signed set list, and mike claims to have memorized rufus' phone number that he wrote down for the boy he made out with on the bus last tour. it was fantastic. and i'm exhausted. i'll probably post something else more coherent tomorrow. hopefully my recording will have turned out decently. *fingers crossed*
let me just say how much i've missed going to shows. live music is such a huge part of what i live for, whether i'm listening to it or performing it... and this is something i'm lacking in my life right now. going out and having such incredible experiences--like this--really makes me appreciate how much live music i've been able to see. and in some ways makes me remember what it is i need to be doing. not only with myself, but for myself. rufus is always such fun, i come out of every one of his shows with a grin on my face, feeling ten times better than i did before. and lately, i've needed that. tonight was lovely.
