it's a small town after all.

the cannon river was frothing at it's seams today, trying to escape.
i let myself out of the house for half an hour and felt lucky my camera had happened to come with me to the bank.

townies, students, parents, children, professors and even dogs came out to watch in shifts as huge tree limbs danced in the falls... trapping each other as they bucked and dove. between the rushing of the river about to flood, the crashing splashes of the logs and the cracking and splintering sounds that sometimes accompanied, people discussed their worries and children ooh-ed and aah-ed. the crowd of umbrellas along the bridge seemed like immediate proof that despite continuing changes, northfield remains a small town. then i stopped to document it, and realized it actually was pretty cool. the city closed off the bridge into town further up the river for awhile, apparently trying to extract an even larger log, but without success. i might have to go back tomorrow and check on it.

here's a clip of the goings on. it's only 15 seconds long or so, but it's kind of cool to hear, and to watch.

Ahoy!
Date: 2004-06-11 04:47 am (UTC)Small world! I drove over the swollen, bubbling Cannon many times today in the call of pizza delivery. I noticed the crowd of slack-jawed gawkers even before I first saw what they were gawking at. Ordinarly, I would be scared to wade up to the falls, but today it would be might intimidating to go wading down there. I was vaguely pondering what it would be like to try it, with a lifeline firmly tied around me. Those trees probably hit pretty hard though!
Great work capturing that tree just coming over the falls. You know, if you submitted these to the Northfield News they might be interested in them??
Also, I've been over to the studio since the Accidentals recorded, but I haven't had time to listen to your session yet. I'll make sure to hear the results next time I'm over there though!

Date: 2004-06-11 08:43 am (UTC)as for the recording, i thought it went pretty well considering the time we had to get it done in. now it's just a matter of teaching paul and john what mixing for acapella sounds like ;)
