From the manual:

"When you sleep, your body goes through a series of sleep cycles. The average adult experiences 4-5 full sleep cycles over an 8-hour period. Each cycle lasts about 90-110 minutes and comprises five different stages.

A typical sleep cycle has five stages and takes 90-110 minutes. During Stage 1 of your sleep cycle, you sleep lightly. At Stage 2, your sleep gets progressively deeper. At Stages 3 and 4, also known as “Delta sleep,” you sleep most heavily; this is when your body rebuilds itself.

Stage 5 of sleep, also known as REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, is marked by extensive physiological changes, such as accelerated respiration, increased brain activity, rapid eye movement, and muscle relaxation. People dream during REM sleep.

In the first third of the night, Delta sleep stages last longer than REM stages. As the night progresses, Delta sleep diminishes in length. By the last third of the night, Delta sleep usually ceases, while REM stages lengthen.

SLEEPTRACKER may find multiple almost-awake moments within the sleep cycle. Almost-awake moments may also vary in frequency throughout the night."

okay. sounds simple enough, right? if you'd have asked me today how i slept last night i would have said poorly. now i can say exactly how poorly. my watch claims i had sixteen twenty-six "almost-awake moments" last night and that 16 minutes was my average time between awake moments. granted two of those on either end probably have to do with me falling asleep and waking up proper, but still. even if we take that number down to ten twenty it's a lot. regardless of the fact that it looks to me like the longest period i was asleep for was about 40 minutes. yay sleeping badly, right? at least i can say this was a bad night for me, and i doubt anything close to normal. in case you were curious, here's when my watch told me i was awake last night:

16 (average time between "almost-awake moments")
------
3:25
3:34(still falling asleep i'd guess)
3:57
4:10(phone beeped with text message?)
4:19
4:33
5:11
5:34
6:01
6:12
6:28
6:38
6:52
7:03
7:14
7:26
8:00
8:09
8:18
8:30
8:40
8:51
9:04
9:28
9:39(eric called)
10:15(was trying to stay asleep)

is it really terrible of me to find this kind of fascinating?

eta: okay, so now that i'm more awake, have more time, and read the instructions about data a bit more carefully, it seems i was awake a few more times than i thought because the first set of data it gives me (in this case "16") is actually the average time between almost-awake moments. hmm. i'm thinking sleep tonight will be a nice thing.

Man, I'd die if I was waking up that often. You're not getting a good night's sleep, you're getting little catnaps.

is this one of those watches that wakes you up when you are in the lightest sleep? or does it just track your sleep......
i really want to get one that wakes you up at an opportune moment, since i have such trouble waking up. i've had sleep issues FOREVER.....

that's exactly what it is. me and the waking up don't get along well at all, so here's hoping it works eventually. right now it's still so novel i think that's affecting everything still.

i'm definitely not used to wearing a watch at night either. explaing why, even though it's kind of big and dorky looking i'm wearing it during the day right now. the faster i get used to it the better.
mine's called the sleeptracker, sleeptracker.com should get you there. kind of expensive, but my dad found mine on ebay brand new. and if it works, it worth it.

re: hanging out. yes yes and yes.
